Mercedes-Maybach’s New Coupe Concept is High Tech, High Style

A dozen years ago, the then-recently-revived German super-luxury brand Maybach produced a massive, menacing super coupe concept called the Exelero for German tire brand Fulda. It generated a lot of buzz at the time, but not enough to prevent parent brand Mercedes-Benz from bringing the ax down on Maybach eight years later. However, now that the name is back from the dead yet again as the Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand, the people in charge figure it’s high time for another imposing mega-lux coupe concept. Say hallo to the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6.

Like the Exelero before it, the 6 (whose name refers to its rounded-up length in meters; its actual longitudinal measurement, 5.6 meters, works out to about 222 inches) features a long nose, a sweeping fastback roofline (this one even more dramatic than that of the older concept) and a big, blingy grille. However, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 has gullwing doors and an altogether more athletic physique. Inside, the two lounge-like seats are surrounded by such premium materials as rose gold trim and polished elm floors, and face a transparent digital display that serves as both the windshield and a full-width heads-up display.

As for power, an electric motor in each wheel – fed by an 80 kWh battery under the floor – provide a combined 738 horsepower. Mercedes say the powertrain can catapult this behemoth to 62 mph in less than 4 seconds, and a maximum range above 200 miles. And when you do have to stop and juice up, the high-speed direct-current-based CCS charging hardware will supposedly add 62 miles of range in 5 minutes. It’s unlikely the production Mercedes-Maybach coupe that’s rumored to be arriving as soon as next year will be an all-electric car (at least initially), but those are certainly numbers that would satisfy us.
