The Strong, Silent Prototype: Chris Harris Drives an Astounding Electric Lola LMP [Video]
There are many cars in this world that have been converted from internal combustion toelectric power. Whether it’s homebuilt vintagesports carswith tiny trunks filled to the brim with lead-acid cells, the latest battery-powered variants of normal cars currently being offered by the OEMs (e.g.Ford Focus Electric,Fiat 500eandHonda Fit EV), or something else, electric carsand trucks riding on non-dedicated platforms aren’t exactly rare. You even see ex-gas burnerracecarsevery once in a while.
Of course, no converted-to-electricity racecar is nearly as extreme as thisLola LMP1coupe. Built and owned by former British parliament memberPaul Draysonand his team,Drayson Racing, this green-in-more-ways-than-one sports prototype kicks out850 horsepowerand, ahem,2,950 lb.-ft of torque. Oh, and it weighs just under2,200 lb.So it should be absurdly fast, and asChris Harrisfound out after driving it, it is. We (andChris) just wish it wasn’t so…quiet. The lack of noise means this car manages to be bland and freaky at the same time.
