Here’s a Cool Kiwi Kasbah

New Zealand on the whole is a picturesque country, and the Bay of Islands – located in the northeast portion of the North Island – is especially photogenic. One of the many small towns along the bay is Rawhiti, home to many moderately-sized vacation homes known as baches (pronounced “batches”) in the local vernacular that look like they could have been built around the turn of the previous century. The house you see here was originally built many years ago, but an extensive 2014 remodel and expansion designed by Studio Pacific Architecture has transformed it into an intriguing cocktail of styles that just happens to be located in paradise.

The main house, which incorporates bits and pieces of the original structure, encompasses common areas like the kitchen, the master suite, an upstairs “loft” and a boat garage. A few steps away, built into the adjacent hillside out of concrete, you’ll find the bunker-esque bedroom wing, providing other guests a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of the main house. Further serenity is provided by overlapping wood shutters that can be slid in front of each individual room. This plot of land would make almost any house look appealing, but the bach that occupies this one makes it a real slice of heaven.
