Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series by AMG Performance Studio is Extra Special
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is a rare beast. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is even rarer and even more beastly. So how do you make an SLS rarer and beastlier than the Black Series? Well, as we’ve seen time after time over the past few years, you could bring it to a tuner for a thorough going-over.
But what if you want to keep it in the family, so to speak, when it comes to modifications? Then you’ll want to talk to the guys and gals at AMG Performance Studio, the in-house tuner’s bespoke vehicle-building department. What you see here is just one example of what this crew is able to do.
The body itself, with the wider fenders, deeper front and rear fascias and aero-enhancing bits, is standard SLS Black Series fare, as are the wheels. However, the color applied to the body and portions of the wheels is most certainly not standard fare; it’s kind of a blend between the regular SLS Black’s signature golden yellow hue, and the wild greenish-yellow if the SLS E-Cell Concept. The graphics on the rocker panels and the top of the windshield are also unique to this car, as are seat inserts that match the exterior color.
Alas, the coloration and decals appear to be the extent of the revisions. The 6.2L V8 under the hood still makes 622 horsepower and 468 lb.-ft of torque, the car still takes 3.5 seconds to hit 60 mph from rest, and it still runs out of steam at 196 mph. It just happens to have a distinctive appearance. And speaking of appearance, you’re probably wondering what that wild color is called. Well it turns out, it doesn’t have one…yet; that’s where you come in. Mercedes-AMG is accepting color name suggestions on its Facebook page, and the company will select its favorite (and release some more pictures of this car) sometime later this month. So get those creative juices flowing, kids!
