Fastback Orange: Resto-Mod Toyota Celica Liftback is Haute JDM Couture [Video]
You might think that thepony caris a uniquely American phenomenon, which is understandable given the worldwide fame of both theChevrolet CamaroandFord Mustang. However, Japan has made more than its share of sport coupes that could be considered pony car-esque in nature over the years. This was particularly true in the late 1960s and early 1970s, which saw the rise of cars like theNissan Silvia,Mitsubishi Galant GTO, andToyota Celica.
It is the last member of that trio that forms the basis forBrian Karasawa’s pride and joy. He’s fitted this gorgeous orangeCelica Mk. 1 Liftback(vintageToyota-speak forhatchback) with a host of custom touches andJDMparts (including the jaunty “Banana” taillights in place of theMustang-like pieces fitted to export Liftbacks). And while it’s unlikely the early Celicas will ever garner the kind of borderline-religious following the Mustang (which is widely – and understandably – regarded as the first Celica’s styling inspiration) enjoys, seeing and hearing this car in action certainly makes it easy to understand why more and more people are getting into the Japanese classic car scene.
