Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is a 707 Horsepower Neutron Bomb [w/ Video]

A few weeks ago, Dodge and SRT revealed their latest hot-dog renditions of the Kowalski-fabulous Challenger. Yes, that’s renditions plural, because for the first time ever, Mother Mopar’s two-door timewarp is available in regular (SRT) and extra-strength (SRT Hellcat) formulas. The latter gets its name from a new supercharged 6.2L version of the third-gen Hemi V8, which ought to be pretty powerful.

How powerful? Well, initially Dodge would only say it was a figure in excess of 600 horsepower. Well, it turns out they were technically telling the truth but, in our mind, they were BS-ing everybody to a certain extent by throwing out an excessively modest lowball estimate. Officially, the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat produces 707 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft of torque. For the record, that first number is 45 more than the most recent Ford Shelby GT500, and 127 more than the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Hell, it’s 67 more than the current Viper and 57 more than the new Chevrolet Corvette Z06! If the Gen 2 426 Street Hemi of the ‘60s and early-‘70s was nicknamed the “Elephant Motor,” then we reckon the Hellcat should wear the nickname “Rabid Wooly Mammoth Motor.” Or maybe “Bear-Holding-a-Shark Motor.” We’re open to suggestions, people.

In any case, that’s an assload-and-a-half of power, folks. Will it overwhelm the Challenger’s chassis and tires? Will it turn the standard 6-speed manual’s clutch into plasma after three dragstrip launches? Hopefully we’ll learn the answers to those and other questions fairly soon.
