Throughout the 1990s,Roland Sandswas one of America’s hottestmotorcycleroad racing prospects. But despite his on-track successes (including winning the oldAMA 250GPnational championship in 1998), the hard-charging young Californian never made it to the big leagues. Multiple injuries didn’t help, either. In any case, when Sands retired from racing in 2002, he wasn’t sure what to do with himself at first. But eventually, he found his niche as a designer of both custom bikes and biker gear.
