The Homer car

Ay Caramba! Old BMW 3 Series Becomes the Homer for the 24 Hours of LeMons [Video]

You there! Yes, you! You look like someone who has become disenchanted with the present state of motorsports, what with all the strict design and engineering constraints, sky-high participation costs (and subsequent dependence on corporate sponsorship) and overarching sense of taking itself way too seriously. If so, you may want to check out the original and preeminent $500 crapcan racing series, the 24 Hours of LeMons.

Where else, pray tell, would you find an oldE30-chassis BMW 3 Series sedan that’s been under the knife to become a tribute to the Homer, a car that featured prominently ina second season episodeof The Simpsons? Sure, we’re a little biased because we know team captain Scott Chamberlain, but check out how detailed this Bimmer-based animated automobile homage is: It’s got the exterior Squishee holders, the soundproof kiddie bubble (complete with Bart and Lisa dolls), and a massive roof-mounted klaxon that belts out La Cucaracha. If you’re going to be due west of Bakersfield, California this weekend, make some time to see the Homer (and 149 other race-prepped rust buckets) compete at Buttonwillow Raceway. Can’t do that? Just follow the team’s progress on its website and Facebook page.
