Rumor Has It: Antonio Banderas, Alec Baldwin on Board for Lamborghini Biopic

While it’s been a while since we’ve heard anything new about any of the multiple Enzo Ferrari life story movies reported to be in the works (including the one that was to feature Robert De Niro as the lead), the crotchety Commendatore might instead end up on the silver screen as a supporting character in a biopic chronicling the life and times of Italy’s “other” legendary supercar maker, Ferruccio Lamborghini. Automobili Lamborghini, as the well-known story goes, was the outgrowth of Signore Lamborghini – who was already a very successful producer of tractors – finding the customer service chops of Signore Ferrari to be rather lackluster.

So who is Tinseltown tasking with portraying these two Type-A personalities? Well Variety and a whole heap of other trade publications report that Antonio Banderas will be playing Lamborghini, while Alec Baldwin will serve as the flick’s Ferrari. Yes, hiring a Spaniard and an American to play a couple of Italians isn’t quite ideal, but accuracy buffs should take heart in the fact that the movie will be based on the book Ferruccio Lamborghini: La storia ufficiale (The official story). Why put so much faith in that? Because it was written by Ferruccio’s son Tonino Lamborghini, who has himself found success in the realms of industrial and lifestyle product design.

Furthermore, Bobby Moresco is signed on to write the screenplay (as he did for critical darling Crash, in addition to producer credits for that picture and Million Dollar Baby) and Michael Radford (known for Il Postino and The Merchant of Venice) is set to direct. Whether or not this product bucks the trend and reaches theaters is yet to be seen, but if it does, we’ll certainly be in line to watch it.
