AMELS 188 is a Floating Slice of Hybrid Heaven

Superyachts are a lot of things, but one of the things they are not is energy efficient. On second thought, we should probably say they usually aren’t, because hybrid-electric propulsion systems are beginning to gain popularity among the super rich buyers of these super boats. And the buyer of this latest megayacht from Dutch builder AMELS has decided to accelerate the trend.

The AMELS 188 (as in 188 feet long) is the work of noted maritime designer Tim Heywood, and features a steel hull designed to optimize speed and efficiency. Deep within this hull you’ll find a hybrid propulsion system that gives the vessel a claimed 15.5 knot top speed and a cruising range of 4,500 nautical miles. And most people will have no objection to spending most of those 4,500 nautical miles on board, considering the sorts of accommodations and amenities on board.

In addition to the 12 crew members and the captain, the boat has room for 12 guests, a couple of which will be fortunate enough to stay in the 861 square-foot full-beam owner’s suite with its fold-down balcony and mid-beam sliding privacy doors. When guests aren’t relaxing, they can check out the 323 square-foot beach club, wellness center with its gym, sauna and Turkish steam shower and airy, open lounges and other common areas. Interior designer Reymond Langton has devised a bright, modern décor that creates the kind of space in which we can easily see ourselves partying or just enjoying the scenery through the expansive windows. Those are exactly the sorts of activities the owner will be able to do come Spring 2018, which is when AMELS says this baby will be finished.
