2017 Audi R8 V10 Spyder is Open for – and Means – Business [w/ Video]
The new second-generation Audi R8 Coupe is already at or near the top of many junior supercar buyers’ shopping lists. But with summer fast approaching in this hemisphere, there really is no time like the present for Quattro GmbH to roll out the open-air version of the Lamborghini Huracan derived machine. Thus, the 2017 Audi R8 V10 Spyder makes its world debut at the New York Auto Show this week with a spec sheet reading a whole lot like the one for the coupe: A 540 horsepower 5.2L V10, an S tronic 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and quattro all-wheel-drive. The big difference is, of course, the folding roof; as before, it’s a fabric-clad piece that can be raised or lowered at speeds up to 31 mph. What’s more, Audi says the new R8 Spyder’s structure is 50% stiffer than that of its predecessor, and that it will only be a tenth of second slower in the run to 62 mph than the coupe (3.6 seconds versus 3.5) before eventually surrendering to aerodynamic drag at a shade under 198 mph. Loose-fitting hat enthusiasts need not apply.
