2016 BMW X5 M and X6 M Cross over to the Badass Side
The vehicles BMW purists love to loathe – the M versions of the X5 and X6 crossovers – are getting a refresh for the 2016 model year, and are now based on the latest versions of their respective base models (codenamed F15 and F16). As before, both of these ‘roided-up soft-roaders feature M-specific exterior styling, sharper suspension tuning, bigger brakes and enormous wheels and tires (specifically 21” wheels wearing 285mm section width tires in front and 315mm meats in back). Also like their predecessors, both the X5 M and X6 M are powered by an M-tuned version of BMW’s 4.4L twin-turbo V8, but this time around it’s producing 567 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft of torque, which represent gains of 12 and 53 over previous peaks. Plus, the old 6-speed automatic transmission has been retired in favor of an M GmbH massaged 8-speed auto that interfaces with an xDrive AWD system that can shuffle as much as 100% of available power to the front or rear axle.
BMW says both of these potent porkers will scoot to 60 mph in four seconds flat and max out at an electronically-limited 155 mph. And while there’s no word when these brutes will be landing in dealerships, there is word how much coin you’ll have to fork over for them: The X5 M will start at $99,650, while X6 M pricing will begin at $103,050. Big bucks, definitely, but also big luxury and big performance. Oh, and big cargo areas for hauling those 5-gallon jugs of Haterade to keep the orthodox Bimmperphiles hydrated.
