Tuningwerk BMW M235i Brings on the Déjà Vu
Quick! What were you doing 26 months ago? Hopefully you were perusing this very website, reading about Tuningwerk’s BMW 1 Series M Coupe, resplendent in its M GmbH war paint, faux safety car graphics and nutso 521 horsepower engine. Still not ringing any bells? We suggest reading about it here before reading this article any further.
Okay, with that Tuningwerk-tweaked 1M fresh in your noggin, take a look at this M235i. Yes, it’s another small BMW coupe wearing white paint with the traditional three-color M stripes (even though it’s not technically an M car), matte black aftermarket wheels and a hefty rear wing. Certainly not the most original restyling formula Tuningwerk has ever cooked up, but why mess with what works?
The sense of familiarity extends beneath the skin, too, as this tuned 2er’s heartbeat is also generated by a twin-turbocharged 3.0L inline-six. However, it hasn’t spent quite as much time in the gym as its predecessor’s powerplant, as it’s putting out “just” 437 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft of torque. Still, Tuningwerk says that’s enough to fling this thing to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, or half-a-second quicker than the time the factory quotes for the stock 8-speed automatic M235i. Make no mistake, this thing is fast…but maybe not fast enough to outrun the overwhelming feeling that we’ve been here before.
