Long Beach GP 4481b 2013 ALMS: Muscle Milk Pickett Racing Victorious at Long Beach...Again

For the third time in 3 straight years, the Muscle Milk Pickett Racing P1 entry driven by Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr took the top step on the podium at this year’s Tequila Patron American Le Mans Series race at Long Beach this past Saturday. The HPD ARX-03a prototype took the win by a margin of only 36.329 seconds over second place finisher Rebellion Racing. The No.12 Lola B12/60, driven by ex-Formula 1 driver Nick Heidfeld and Neel Jani had qualified first the day before.

Extreme Speed Motorsports dominated the P2 category at this year’s race – finishing 1-2 in its class. The highly competitive GT class also saw a 1-2 finish by the same team, with the BMW Team RLL’s No. 55 BMW Z4 GTE driven by Bill Auberlen and Maxime Martin taking the win. This was only the team’s second race with the new Z4. The Prototype Challenge class win went to the No. 05 CORE Autosport entry driven by Colin Braun and Jon Bennett, also for the third straight year in a row.

  • SRT Viper TA Exacts Its Revenge [Video]

video still 038 640x351 SRT Viper TA Exacts Its Revenge [Video]

You don’t want to mess with Ralph Gilles. Oh sure, he may be an accomplished automotive designer and the head of Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) brand. But if you try to besmirch the reputation of him, his coworkers, his company, or the products made by his company well, may Walter Chrysler have mercy on your soul. When Donald Trump parroted presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s, uh, factually-deficient proclamation that Jeep was moving all of its production to China, Ralphie G made a beeline to the Twitterverse to disseminate his opinion of the reality TV host, provocateur and sometime real estate kingpin.

While the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1’s defeat of the freshly minted SRT Viper GTS in a recent MotorTrend comparison test wasn’t quite the same genus of trolling as The Donald’s jaw-flappings, Mr. Gilles still found it irksome. So irksome, in fact, that he and the SRT team moved the development of the new Viper TA – as in Time Attack – ahead of schedule. By at least half a year. And when the more hardcore Viper was ready for review by the motoring press, which outlet do you think Ralph called first? (Hint: It wasn’t us. Not that we’re bitter or anything…) As you can see in this video from MT, the results of the TA’s upgrades speak for themselves (with a bit of help from our bud Jonny Lieberman and the magazine’s tame racing driver Randy Pobst).

  • Hennessey Announces and Renders New SRT Viper Based Models

2013ViperVenom700R 640x480 Hennessey Announces and Renders New SRT Viper Based Models

John Hennessey’s first automotive tuning project was his own 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4, but the Texas hot rodder made his name (and built his company into what it is today) on the backs of hopped up Dodge Vipers. From the first Venom 500 in 1993 to the 1,000hp-plus twin-turbo monsters of the last few years, Hennessey has made itself synonymous with the term “tuned Viper,” even as the company has introduced upgrade packages for numerous other vehicles, as well as its own supercar, the Venom GT.

So now that there’s a new Viper (sold under the SRT banner), it should be no surprise that HPE plans to make it even burlier as well. But rather than just offer one flavor of extra spice for the first SRT-badged vehicle, Hennessey is offering two.

  • 2013 SRT Viper Ignites a Transatlantic Family Feud [w/ Videos]

sr013008vp 2013 SRT Viper Ignites a Transatlantic Family Feud [w/ Videos]

The first two generations of the Dodge Viper (Some sources break those two generations into two further generations.) were brash, brutal and downright angry. These thundering 10-cylinder neo-Cobras, both open- and closed-top, routinely beat up on all manner of European supercars, not to mention crosstown rival Corvette. What’s more, these beating occurred on the street and on the track, the latter being where race-prepped Vipers scored numerous wins, including three consecutive GT class wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the overall win at the 2000 24 Hours of Daytona.

However, the Dodge Viper’s story came to an end on July 1, 2010, as the last example rolled out of the Conner Avenue Assembly plant in Detroit. Scarcely two months later, though, word came down that a new third (or fifth; take your pick) generation Viper would be coming in a couple years. Well, now it’s a couple years later, and the new Viper is indeed here. A lot has stayed the same with the new car, but a lot has changed, too.
