• Nissan and Nismo Look Back at Racing through the Years [Video]

video still 026 640x352 Nissan and Nismo Look Back at Racing through the Years [Video]

Although Nissan isn’t quite as synonymous with racing as, say, Porsche, Ferrari or BMW, the Japanese company does have a long, generally proud history in motorsports. From the pre-World War II Datsun Racer (which looked a lot like an American midget car) to last year’s groundbreaking DeltaWing, Nissan (and its motorsports arm, Nismo) has been competing – and often winning – on some of the racing world’s most prestigious stages.

To celebrate this illustrious history (and look ahead to the future, with Nismo’s recently-opened new world headquarters and this week’s announcement of a program to enter an electric car in next year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans), Nissan and Nismo made this very cool video. Granted, it glosses over some notable success stories (BRE’s Trans-Am title-winning Datsun 510 program chief among them), but we definitely get a kick out of seeing the evolution of not just Nissan racing, but the evolution of racing itself. Also: Mr. K. You can’t front on that. Yes, you could try, but you would fail miserably. After all, even if you are 103 years old like he is, you still didn’t sire the Z-car or the aforementioned 510.

  • NISMO Builds a Turn-Key Race Car Out of the Nissan 370Z

19294621041615195116 NISMO Builds a Turn Key Race Car Out of the Nissan 370Z

Since almost Day 1, people have been racing Nissan’s Z Car. The driving careers of guys like John Morton, Steve Millen, Johnny O’Connell and that guy from the salad dressing bottles are intrinsically tied to track-going Zs. And it’s no secret why Z Cars are raced: Their tidy proportions, rear-wheel-drive, and potent six-cylinder engines (with a few V8-powered track only exceptions) are all great attributes to have when engaging in “spirited” driving.

Now NISMO, Nissan’s in-house motorsports and tuning arm, is building a track-only 370Z – dubbed the 370 RC – for use in lower level GT and production car racing. But that’s not the exciting part; the exciting part is you can buy one (if you have the dough, of course). So what’s included? Where can you race it? Make the jump for the answers to these and other burning questions.

For a city where car ownership is pretty much pointless, never mind mandatory, New York sure puts on a darn good auto show. This year saw plenty of new models debut, but a lot of them were everyday subcompacts and family sedans. Zzzzzzzzz. We know you’re here for all the firebreathing super sedans and sports cars that showed up in the Big Apple, and you can find the 10 with which we were most smitten after the jump.

nismo leaf rc Nissan Leaf NISMO RC Concept Brings Super GT to the Whole Foods Parking Lot

Up until very recently, electric cars had a reputation of being slow, unexciting transportation appliances (This despite the fact the fastest car in the world from 1898 to 1904 was a French electric car, the Jeantaud Duc.). Lately, though, battery-powered cars are starting to come across as legitimate performance cars, due in no small part to cars like the Tesla Roadster and the Mercedes-Benz SLS E-Cell.

Now Nissan seems to be jumping onto the exciting EV bandwagon. First was the Esflow concept, which premiered at the Geneva Motor Show last month, and now the company’s tuning arm, NISMO, has created a radical, widebody racing version of the Leaf that’s on display at the New York Auto Show. But it turns out there’s very little Leaf underneath.

  • 2009 NISMO 370Z Official Price Announced – $39,130 MSRP

    2009 nismo 370z 01 0 2009 NISMO 370Z Official Price Announced $39,130 MSRP

The long wait is over. The Nissan NISMO 370Z has officially gone on sale with an MSRP of $39,130. The NISMO version adds 18 additional horsepower, a sport-tuned suspension system and an aerodynamic body kit. The 3.7-liter V6 engine is good for 350 hp and 276 lb-ft of torque. The extra juice comes from a free flow dual exhaust system, muffler tuning and a remapped ECM. The gearbox is a close-ratio 6-speed manual tranny with the company’s SynchroRev Match. This is great for those who haven’t mastered heel-toe downshifting. Following the trend set by Acura, only a handful of accessories will be available. These include NISMO Carpeted Floor Mats ($115), Illuminated Kick Plates ($200) and a Carpeted Trunk Mat ($95).

The suspension system of the Nissan 370Z has been tweaked by NISMO with a reinforced strut tower brace, body dampers, specially tuned springs, shock absorbers and stabilization bars. The car sits on wide 19 inch RAYS forged aluminum-alloy wheels. A limited-slip diff and sports brakes come standard. The aero kit integrates an extended nose with canard design for better downforce along with a chin spoiler. Airflow is managed by special side sills, a new rear fascia and large rear spoiler.

  • 2009 New York Auto Show – 2009 Nissan NISMO 370Z Revealed

    2009 NISMO 370Z 01 0 2009 New York Auto Show 2009 Nissan NISMO 370Z Revealed

No question, the 2009 Nissan 370Z is an amazing car. But, personally, I feel that the aesthetics make the car look a bit soft since it has to appeal to both sport cars junkies and people who like to think it’s “cute.” The 2009 NISMO 370Z takes that fluff, beats out the stuffing, gives it some jail house tats and puts a chip on its shoulder (figuratively speaking of course). The car that I had hoped the new Z would closer approach is now going to be available thanks to the gear-heads over at NISMO, Nissan’s in-house tuning operation.

The new, second generation NISMO 370Z gets an upgraded 350 horsepower 3.7-liter V6 engine with 276 lb-ft of torque at 5,200 rpm. That’s a 18 hp increase over the base model. A new exhaust system and revised ECU help the car achieve the additional horsepower. This engine is matched with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission featuring Nissan’s SynchroRev Match that handles the synchronization of engine revs during shifting. This very nice feature that essentially blips the throttle can be deactivated if you want less intervention.

The NISMO 370Z gets some rigidity in the form of a strut tower brace and performance dampers. The springs and stabilizer bars both front and rear have been made stiffer to provide better control and handling. Some serious RAYS aluminum-alloy rims are provided (19×9.5-inch front and 19×10.5-inch rear) wrapped in Yokohama ADVAN Sport tires measuring 245/40ZR19 up front and 285/35/ZR19 in rear. NISMO sport brakes provide serious stopping power via 14.0 inch vented rotors with 4-piston calipers in front and 13.8 inch vented rotors with 2-piston calipers in the rear.

Aerodynamic tweaks are aplenty with an extended front nose design featuring a canard at each corner for greater downforce in addition to a fully integrated chin spoiler. It also benefits from side sills, a revised rear bumper and massive rear spoiler along with flared fenders. Inside, NISMO branding is spread throughout with the most apparent logos found on the seats and center console. Pricing is not yet available for the 2009 Nissan NISMO 370Z but should be before it is sold (otherwise, how could we buy it?)

NISMO is short for Nissan Motorsports, the company’s in house tuning specialists. Lots of anticipation has surrounded both the unveiling of the Nissan 370Z as well as what NISMO would bring to the table. Although, we don’t know for sure, recent leaks point to 2 potential offerings.

The NISMO S-Tune Aero Package is the less aggressive of the two. Externally it provides a new front end with updated nose slice and front spoiler, side skirts and a rear spoiler. The NISMO S-Tune Perfomance Package goes a step further by provided 19 inch wheels, a new exhaust system, suspension system and better brakes. Both offer NISMO branded floor mats to round out the package. As this information is preliminary, more details should emerge concerning pricing, availability in the US and official specs.
