Everyone has a wish for their birthday, but if you’re 100 years old, you should get your wish granted, no matter what. A woman in New Hampshire had her wish granted recently as she wanted to turn some laps on a NASCAR track, and there just happens to be one: New Hampshire Motor Speedway, a track that is just over a mile long and doesn’t have much banking.
Rachel Gilbert, who has been a fan of racing for over 50 years of her life, was allowed to get on the track in Loudon for her 100th birthday, and while she did her best to try and reach 100 miles per hour, she could only reach 53 miles per hour, which is likely the best for everyone involved, although we’re pretty sure she won’t be favored by NASCAR odds anytime soon.
NOS Energy Drink held a Celebrity Go-Kart Challenge at K1 Speed in Ontario, CA to kick-off NASCAR weekend. This special charity event benefitted the “Kyle Busch Foundation.” NASCAR driver Kyle Busch and Formula DRIFT driver Chris Forsberg hosted the event racing against celebrities that included actor William Fichtner, model/actress Kimberley Leemans, MMA fighter Josh Barnett and Chef Holli winner of “Hell’s Kitchen.” Kyle Busch came out on top with the fastest lap time of the day, but the real winner was the Kyle Busch Foundation who received a check for $10,000 from NOS Energy Drink.
The event began with 30 drivers given driving instructions by Kyle Busch and Chris Forsberg to better prepare them before getting on the track. The 30 drivers were broken up into groups of 10 and given a 10 lap practice session followed by a 10 lap qualifying session. The top 3 drivers from each group were selected based on fastest lap time and would advance into the main event versus Kyle Busch and Chris Forsberg.
Danica Patrick definitely won’t be known as an online gambling favorite to win the Nationwide title in NASCAR, but she was definitely making up ground through the first four races of the season. However, the IndyCar season is starting, which means Patrick has to fulfill her obligations to Andretti Autosport, which means she won’t be back in NASCAR until June.
Patrick is ninth in the Nationwide Standings (no full-time Sprint Cup drivers are allowed to receive points), and she didn’t finish lower than 17th through the first three races, including a fourth-place run at Las Vegas, the best finish for a woman in any of NASCAR’s three national series. The 33rd-place run at Bristol, when she was involved in a wreck with Ryan Truex, shouldn’t take anything away from her great start as better and more experienced drivers have gotten bit by the half-mile bullring that is Bristol. Patrick is more comfortable in a stock car than she ever has been, but now she won’t race in the Nationwide Series until June at Chicagoland, and you have to wonder how good she would be if Patrick picked a series.
Just last week it was all over the newswires that Danica Patrick had finalized a multi-year agreement to race in IndyCar for the newly restructured Andretti Autosport team. Now, it seems that reporting was erroneous as it appears that Danica may be moving to NASCAR afterall. Sporting News has information that a deal with Dale Earnhardt Jr’s NASCAR National Series Team has been inked for 2010 and that an official announcement will be made tomorrow in Phoenix. GoDaddy will be the official sponsor of the stock car.
It looks like part-time Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model Danica Patrick will run an abreviated schedule of the Nationwide series but participate in all 18 races in the IndyCar series. She is expected to make her NASCAR debut in the season-opener on February 13th at Daytona Beach, Florida. It’s also possible she will be seen racing in the ARCA series for preparation. Driving for JR Motorsports, Danica should have access to one of the best cars in the game as Hendrick Motorsports builds their cars. This constructor has been absolutely dominant in NASCAR and there is no reason that their run shouldn’t continue. Stay tuned as we’ll have an update tomorrow…
