• Electric Sliding: Chris Harris Hoons the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive [Video]

video still 055 640x350 Electric Sliding: Chris Harris Hoons the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive [Video]

A few weeks ago we brought you a video from the Drive channel in which Chris Harris wrung out the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series during its press launch event at France’s Circuit Paul Ricard. What you might not have known is that Mercedes and AMG used the very same event to debut the SLS AMG Electric Drive, the gas-free Gullwing we first came to know as the SLS E-Cell. So naturally, even though he loves loud, petrol-chugging conventional cars, he took the opportunity to sample this most powerful AMG production car ever.

Needless to say, after watching the video, you get the feeling that Chris came away rather impressed with the SLS AMG Electric Drive. Of course, with 750hp at his right foot’s disposal, how could he not? But it seems like he was even more in awe of the car’s torque vectoring capabilities, and to be honest, so are we. Amazing what powering each wheel independently can do, huh?

  • Hamann Spyridon Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG is Decadence Defined

Hamann Mercedes G65 AMG SPYRIDON 1 640x438 Hamann Spyridon Mercedes Benz G65 AMG is Decadence Defined

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is, without question, one of the baddest new vehicles you can buy. And the outrageous V12-powered G65 AMG (which isn’t available in the U.S.) is the high school super senior of the SUV kingdom. You know, the guy always puts his feet on the furniture, sneaks in smoke breaks in the bathroom, addresses each faculty member with “Yo, Teach!,” does just enough to maintain a D- average, and has fathered at least one child. Yeah, that guy. Like the G65, he won’t go very far in life (or on a tank of gas, as the case may be), but man, does he know how to have a good time.

But what if you want a big, blocky big block Benz that is even more of a party animal? Well, Hamann has created a tuning package for the ultimate G-Wagen called Spyridon. And if you like ostentatious, boy, have you come to the right place.

  • Gullwings of Desire: Chris Harris Samples the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series [Video]

video still 041 640x353 Gullwings of Desire: Chris Harris Samples the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Black Series [Video]

Certainly one of the biggest stars of last November’s Los Angeles Auto Show was the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series. Long rumored to be in development and probably longer desired, this extra-strength neo-Gullwing incorporates all of the usual upgrades found on AMG’s Black Series models: Flared fenders, retuned suspension, bigger brakes, more power and less weight, to name just a few. And while we still aren’t smitten with the SLS coupe’s looks, we do like how all of the Black’s bits are functional and, on paper anyway, turn it into a much more capable and focused driving tool.

But is it a more capable and focused driving tool in practice too? Well, our favorite British car journo without a TV gig Chris Harris tried this new mega Merc at its press launch, which took place at the Circuit Paul Ricard in France, and he seems to feel that’s the case. Then again, maybe that’s just us misinterpreting his mirthful giggling and copious use of complimentary and positive words. You should probably watch the video and decide for yourself.

  • Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG Drops Ahead of NY Auto Show

Mercedes Benz CLA45 AMG 10 640x480 Mercedes Benz CLA45 AMG Drops Ahead of NY Auto Show

One of the things I’ve always found remarkable about Top Gear (apart from being one of the most awesome motoring shows on the planet) is their secret-keeping abilities. Specifically, their ability to keep the identity of the Stig a secret. Companies across the world go to all sorts of lengths to maintain corporate/trade secrecy and automakers are no strangers to the game. Except that more than a few of them are slipping.

In the past few months, it would seem that automotive spies across the world have gotten a lot better at finding out the latest sheetmetal. Even the Lamborghini Veneno was revealed in a Czech auto publication just before its Geneva debut. And now, one of the latest offerings from Mercedes has been uncloaked before its New York International Auto Show official release. Not that it would have been too hard to imagine what AMG would have cooked up for the new Mercedes-Benz CLA45

  • 2013 Geneva Motor Show: The Top 20 Debuts

geneva 2013 title 640x512 2013 Geneva Motor Show: The Top 20 Debuts

More than a few people think supercars are an endangered species. All the concerns about flaunting wealth inequality and using lots of gas are just some of the forces conspiring to make these most athletic of automobiles less and less desirable for both builders and buyers. So we can look forward to a future with fewer tarmac-melting monsters and more plug-in kumbaya cracker boxes, right?

Not so fast, kemosabe. If the lineup of world debuts at this year’s Geneva Motor Show is any indication, we may be entering a new golden age of 200+ mph hypercars. The difference this time around is many of them are a bit more responsible, with overdrive (and occasionally double overdrive) 7-speed transmissions and hybrid assist. Of course, these aren’t the only automotive stars in the lakeside Swiss municipality. Here are the 20 premieres that really stir our hot chocolate.

ART Mercedes Benz G65 AMG Streetline 05 640x423 A.R.T. G Streetline 65 is a Blinding Display of Tuning

In case it’s not on your radar, the Geneva Motor Show is opening March 7th and will feature premieres from nearly every manufacturer and tuner across the globe. McLaren will be revealing their P1 hypercar in the flesh, Ferrari will be showcasing their Enzo successor, TECHART will enlighten its customers with further details about their new 991 customization program, and the list goes on and on.

Nürnberg-based A.R.T. Tuning is joining is the fray with their new widebody kit for the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG. A.R.T. says their new G Streetline 65 kit “makes the legend an icon”. We’ll chalk that up to a translation error because what the kit really looks like it means is “makes a blindingly large SUV a road-monstering behemoth”.

  • Brabus 800 Roadster is an Industrial-Strength Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG

Brabus 800 Roadster Mercedes SL65 AMG 4 640x426 Brabus 800 Roadster is an Industrial Strength Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG

Even though Mercedes-Benz and AMG have gone to great lengths to make the new R231-chassis SL63 AMG more efficient than its predecessor (e.g. fitting a smaller turbocharged engine and a lightweight, almost-all-aluminum body), the two companies are still offering the mountain-motor SL65 AMG. This bi-turbo V12 bruiser doesn’t make any bones about being thirsty and, considering how much grunt it makes (621hp and 738 lb.-ft of torque), does it really have to? Really, if you want a new Merc that’s not murder on your fuel budget, get a C250 or an E350 BlueTec.

But what if you’re one of the people for who fuel economy really, really is of no concern? And what if you think 3.8 seconds 0-60 and a 186 mph top speed is underwhelming? Well, the Mercedes-Benz experts at Brabus are ready to help.

  • Gullwing America 300 SLC is a One-off Wonder

Gullwing America GWA 300 SLC 1 640x420 Gullwing America 300 SLC is a One off Wonder

Although it might not be as big, exclusive or decadent as prewar ancestors like the 540K and SSK, the 1955-‘58 Mercedes-Benz 300 Sc (chassis code W188) was still a grand tourer in every sense of the term. Offered in 2+2 coupe, cabriolet and roadster body styles, just 92 of these aluminum-bodied beauties were built during that first model year, with a starting price of 36,500 Deutschmarks (or just a whisker over $18,000 U.S., a colossal amount of money in 1955). Oh sure, the far sportier 300 SL got much more attention then and still does today, but the Sc is still mighty, mighty desirable.

Skip ahead to 2013, and there’s one anonymous Eastern European car enthusiast who wants a modern take on the 300 Sc built on the bones of a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster. The firm he or she has tasked with designing and building this dream machine is Gullwing America, and what GWA has come up with is the 300 SLC.

mcchip dkr mercedes c63 amg 02 640x426 German Tuner mcchip dkr Supercharges the 2013 Mercedes Benz C63 AMG

In a world where everything can be automated and the precision-guided instrument of a machine is often found in place of a skilled craftsman, there’s something to be said about still doing things by hand – and the folks at AMG must feel the same way. Under the self-descriptive motto of “one man, one engine”, each AMG engine is hand-built and assembled by one craftsman and one craftsman only. Once finished, the individual affixes a hand-signed plaque to the engine so each AMG customer knows who to thank.

So what do you do then, if you don’t feel that your AMG machine is quite powerful enough? Specifically, what do you do if you feel your C63 AMG with its 6.2L V8 and 451HP just isn’t enough? Well, if you’re German tuning company mcchip-dkr, you apply forced induction and over eight years of in-house chip development research and let the results speak for themselves.
