gran turismo 6 009 640x360 Gran Turismo 6 is Playstation 3 Bound This Holiday Season [w/ Videos]

After a gestation so lengthy that Axl Rose was quoted as saying “What the hell is taking Kazunori and crew so long?”, Gran Turismo 5 finally arrived in November of 2010. And while it was without question a tremendous game with gorgeous graphics and a mammoth car list, it felt, in many respects, rushed. Hard to believe when you consider it came out almost six years after Gran Turismo 4, but things like a new-but-half-baked damage model, continued use of angry appliance exhaust sounds, woeful under-utilizations of the WRC, NASCAR and Top Gear licenses and, perhaps most aggravating of all, many times more “Standard Cars” (i.e. models ported from GT4 and the Gran Turismo title for the PSP) than “Premium Cars” (i.e. brand new car models built from many thousands more polygons and featuring fully-modeled interiors) left many longtime fans of the franchise feeling underwhelmed, if not out-and-out cheated.

So you can imagine our skepticism when we heard rumors that the father of Gran Turismo, Kazunori Yamauchi, and his team at Polyphony Digital would not only be revealing Gran Turismo 6 sooner rather than later, but also bring it to market by the end of the 2013 calendar year. Well, following a massive press event (which also served to celebrate the series’ 15th anniversary) at England’s Silverstone Circuit earlier today, we can report there’s more than a little truth to those rumors. More than a little truth, and some gorgeous, gorgeous visuals.

  • Lamborghini Aventador LP720-4 50° Anniversario is a Golden Rocket

    mtf5978a 640x425 Lamborghini Aventador LP720 4 50° Anniversario is a Golden Rocket

When Ferruccio Lamborghini built his first sports car in 1963 as an f-you to Enzo Ferrari after the latter rebuked the criticisms the former leveled at the latter’s cars, he probably didn’t expect the firm he started to still be building sports cars a half-century later. He also probably didn’t expect it to be owned by Volkswagen, but we doubt even the world’s preeminent psychic in 1963 would have predicted that. Yet even after decades of ups and downs, Automobili Lamborghini has reached the big 5-0, and it’s in the best shape it has ever been.

So how is this storied brand supporting such a milestone birthday? Well, the most notable way it’s marking the occasion is the Veneno, Aventador-based, Le Mans Prototype-inspired super-dupercar. Unfortunately, only three diehard Lambo fans were able to add Venenos to their collections. But rather than telling the remainder of its most loyal customers “tough merda,” the company has come up with a cheaper (but less-exclusive) way for them to get in on the golden jubilee action.

  • 2013 Geneva Motor Show: The Top 20 Debuts

geneva 2013 title 640x512 2013 Geneva Motor Show: The Top 20 Debuts

More than a few people think supercars are an endangered species. All the concerns about flaunting wealth inequality and using lots of gas are just some of the forces conspiring to make these most athletic of automobiles less and less desirable for both builders and buyers. So we can look forward to a future with fewer tarmac-melting monsters and more plug-in kumbaya cracker boxes, right?

Not so fast, kemosabe. If the lineup of world debuts at this year’s Geneva Motor Show is any indication, we may be entering a new golden age of 200+ mph hypercars. The difference this time around is many of them are a bit more responsible, with overdrive (and occasionally double overdrive) 7-speed transmissions and hybrid assist. Of course, these aren’t the only automotive stars in the lakeside Swiss municipality. Here are the 20 premieres that really stir our hot chocolate.

  • The Lamborghini Veneno Celebrates 50 Years of Italy’s Finest Fighting Bulls

Lamborghini Veneno Geneva Motor Show 2013 13 640x360 The Lamborghini Veneno Celebrates 50 Years of Italys Finest Fighting Bulls

In the weeks leading up to the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, there was hell of a lot of build up around the McLaren P1, the often-teased Ferrari LaFerrari, and even the Toyota/Subaru FR-S/BRZ droptop. Yet it was a strangely quiet affair around Sant’Agata. Most people knew that Lamborghini was up to something, but nobody was too sure. Personally, this editor thought that Lamborghini would be showcasing a new four door hybrid competitor ala their Estoque concept a few years back.

Instead, Lamborghini took the wraps off their car and dropped a bomb. A sinister, swooping, angry looking bomb that stopped more than one show-goer in their tracks and put media camera shutters on overtime duty. It was clear that the fighting bull wanted a slice of the hypercar pie that Porsche, Ferrari, and McLaren were all competing for and Lamborghini had done their homework. No messing around, no soft side, and not a hybrid system in sight. Introducing the Lamborghini Veneno

  • Mansory Carbonado Takes the Lamborghini Aventador to the Twin-Turbo Danger Zone

mansory carbonado aventador 1 640x426 Mansory Carbonado Takes the Lamborghini Aventador to the Twin Turbo Danger Zone

The Lamborghini Aventador isn’t exactly what most people would call “slow.” Its 6.5L V12 sends most of its 691hp to all four-wheels, vaulting the Aventador to 60 mph in about three seconds en route to a top speed comfortably over 200 mph. And thanks to those wild, stealth aircraft inspired looks, it’s not exactly subtle, either.

However, many sheiks, oligarchs and reality TV producers wouldn’t be caught dead in a mere stock Lamborghini. It just wouldn’t be an accurate reflection of their station in life. The same cannot be said for this carbon-clad number from Mansory.

  • Reunited and It Feels So Good: Lamborghini Countach LP400 and Valentino Balboni [Video]

video still 022 640x367 Reunited and It Feels So Good: Lamborghini Countach LP400 and Valentino Balboni [Video]

For gearheads in a certain age bracket (say, born between 1970 and 1985), the Lamborghini Countach was the supercar. Oh sure, the Ferrari F40 and Porsche 959 were more athletic and felt more finished, but the Lambo had those two beat in three areas: First, it was the first to be introduced, nearly 15 years before the Ferrari and the Porsche. Second, that outrageous, angular shape (created by Bertone-employed prodigy Marcello Gandini, who had also designed the Countach’s predecessor, the Miura) looked like nothing else on the road. And third, there were the doors. Oh, those vertically-opening doors that have been fitted to every Lamborghini flagship (not to mention hundreds of Civics, Cavaliers and other front-drive tin cans) since.

Consequently, you can forgive us for geeking out at this video of longtime Lamborghini chief test driver Valentino Balboni exercising an early Countach LP400. The ease with which the retired-since-2008 Balboni hustles the Countach (which has a reputation for being clumsy and uncomfortable) down the road is a sight to behold. And his story about an encounter with a local farmer drives the point about the radical styling home quite nicely.

  • DMC Lamborghini Gallardo SOHO Serves Up LP570-Like Looks and Performance [w/ Video]

dmc gallardo soho 01 640x426 DMC Lamborghini Gallardo SOHO Serves Up LP570 Like Looks and Performance [w/ Video]

The pre-facelift Lamborghini Gallardo (made from 2003 to 2007) may be obsolete compared to a current Gallardo or any of its competitors, but it is still very worthy of the “junior supercar” label. It’s also become relatively affordable; clean, low mileage examples can be had for comfortably under $100,000 (hey, we did say relatively affordable). And, critically, it still looks incredible, hauls ass and makes glorious, glorious noise.

But what if you want an early Gallardo with later Gallardo swagger and performance? Well, you could just save your pennies for a newer starter Lamborghini like an LP570-4 Superleggera, but considering how many millions of pennies you’d have to save to make up the difference, that would take a while. Or you could get in touch with the Lambo whisperers at DMC and get faster (but not instant) gratification.

  • The Top 10 Modified Tuner Cars of 2012

top 10 tuner cars 2012 title 640x494 The Top 10 Modified Tuner Cars of 2012

Exactly 12 months ago, we assembled a list of the 10 tuner vehicles from 2011 that really floated our proverbial boat. Privately, we didn’t think that 2012’s crop of tuned and modified cars, trucks and SUVs could top that of 2011; however – and this is a rare New Year’s Eve treat for you, boys and girls – we are happy to admit that we were wrong. This past lap of the sun has seen the automotive aftermarket assemble some of the fastest, most powerful, and most visually striking machines to ever turn wheels.

Thus, you can imagine how hard it was for us to narrow our selection down to 10. But that’s exactly what we’ve managed to do, and as you’ll see, the list covers a wide range of manufacturers, tuners, and vehicle types. Will 2013’s top tuner cars be even more amazing? We’re thinking yes. From all of us to all of you, have a happy and safe New Year.

  • Oakley Design Lamborghini Aventador LP760-4 Dragon Edition is a Real Fire Breather

Lamborghini Aventador Dragon Oakley 08 640x428 Oakley Design Lamborghini Aventador LP760 4 Dragon Edition is a Real Fire Breather

If you happened to find your stocking stuffed with rolls and rolls of C-notes yesterday morning (a regular occurrence, of course), you’re probably still pondering what to do with those new riches. You could invest it in stocks, commodities and/or real estate, but odds are you’ll end up with less money, not more (especially if this whole “fiscal cliff” clusterbleep isn’t resolved). You could put the money away for a rainy day, but if you put it in a bank it’ll earn an interest rate that’s lower than Iran’s blood-alcohol limit, and if you keep it at home you’ll constantly be fretting about being robbed. Besides, where, pray tell, is the fun in letting money just sit there?

There’s loads of fun to be had, however, in spending that money on a new supercar. And few supercars that you can purchase new are more super than the Lamborghini Aventador. However, if you consider the 691hp served up by the latest Lamborghini flagship in stock trim is insufficient (and it’s okay if you feel that’s the case; we’re all friends here), there are ways to add more. One option is to get in touch with the people at Oakley Design.
