• Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG Drops Ahead of NY Auto Show

Mercedes Benz CLA45 AMG 10 640x480 Mercedes Benz CLA45 AMG Drops Ahead of NY Auto Show

One of the things I’ve always found remarkable about Top Gear (apart from being one of the most awesome motoring shows on the planet) is their secret-keeping abilities. Specifically, their ability to keep the identity of the Stig a secret. Companies across the world go to all sorts of lengths to maintain corporate/trade secrecy and automakers are no strangers to the game. Except that more than a few of them are slipping.

In the past few months, it would seem that automotive spies across the world have gotten a lot better at finding out the latest sheetmetal. Even the Lamborghini Veneno was revealed in a Czech auto publication just before its Geneva debut. And now, one of the latest offerings from Mercedes has been uncloaked before its New York International Auto Show official release. Not that it would have been too hard to imagine what AMG would have cooked up for the new Mercedes-Benz CLA45

  • Hamann Soltador is a Chopper-Shaped Porsche Tribute

Hamann Soltador 2 640x502 Hamann Soltador is a Chopper Shaped Porsche Tribute

This year’s Geneva Motor Show (which runs through this Sunday in case you’re in the neighborhood) is stacked to the rafters with new tuned and customized cars from Europe’s most popular tuners. It’s almost enough to make a person’s head spin. And all those tuned cars – as well as the numerous stock vehicles – also draw attention away from the vehicles that don’t fit into either of those categories.

Vehicles like, say, this highly-customized chopper. But it hasn’t been built by Arlen Ness or some other well-known chopper shop; no, it’s a product of Hamann. Yes Hamann, the firm better known for sprucing up four-wheeled conveyances from various and sundry European nameplates like Mercedes-Benz and BMW. So what is it doing fooling with an American-style, American-powered motorcycle?

    hamann mi5Sion m5 4 640x345 Hamann Mi5Sion BMW M5 Has a Flare for the Dramatic

With all the megafast, megabuck supercars – both regular and hybrid – premiering at the Geneva Motor Show, it’s easy to forget that there’s a bumper crop of tuner vehicles at this year’s show. And that’s saying something, because Geneva has for years been a venue favored by one-stop aftermarket shops looking to show off their newest creations. It is neutral soil, after all.

Hamann chose Geneva to debut its latest take on the current F10-chassis BMW M5. It’s called the Mi5Sion, and while it may be stock under the hood, it definitely isn’t stock on the outside.

  • 2013 Geneva Motor Show: The Top 20 Debuts

geneva 2013 title 640x512 2013 Geneva Motor Show: The Top 20 Debuts

More than a few people think supercars are an endangered species. All the concerns about flaunting wealth inequality and using lots of gas are just some of the forces conspiring to make these most athletic of automobiles less and less desirable for both builders and buyers. So we can look forward to a future with fewer tarmac-melting monsters and more plug-in kumbaya cracker boxes, right?

Not so fast, kemosabe. If the lineup of world debuts at this year’s Geneva Motor Show is any indication, we may be entering a new golden age of 200+ mph hypercars. The difference this time around is many of them are a bit more responsible, with overdrive (and occasionally double overdrive) 7-speed transmissions and hybrid assist. Of course, these aren’t the only automotive stars in the lakeside Swiss municipality. Here are the 20 premieres that really stir our hot chocolate.

  • Ferrari LaFerrari Hybrid Offers 949HP of ‘Maximum Expression’ from the Prancing Horse

Ferrari LaFerrari Geneva Motor Show 2013 02 640x395 Ferrari LaFerrari Hybrid Offers 949HP of Maximum Expression from the Prancing Horse

Lets just consider for a moment that Ferrari just achieved the highest rating in the 2013 BrandFinance Global 500 – effectively making Ferrari the most powerful brand in the world. Taking into account metrics such as net revenue, brand affection, loyalty, average revenue per customer, and a number of other qualitative/quantitative factors, Ferrari edged out the likes of BMW and Volkswagen for the top spot and it’s not really hard to see why.

Why? Because the car above is the successor to the legendary Enzo Ferrari that debuted nearly 10 years ago. Described by president Luca di Montezemolo as “the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence”, the LaFerrari is Ferrari’s first foray into the world of hybrid power and what a first it is…

  • The Lamborghini Veneno Celebrates 50 Years of Italy’s Finest Fighting Bulls

Lamborghini Veneno Geneva Motor Show 2013 13 640x360 The Lamborghini Veneno Celebrates 50 Years of Italys Finest Fighting Bulls

In the weeks leading up to the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, there was hell of a lot of build up around the McLaren P1, the often-teased Ferrari LaFerrari, and even the Toyota/Subaru FR-S/BRZ droptop. Yet it was a strangely quiet affair around Sant’Agata. Most people knew that Lamborghini was up to something, but nobody was too sure. Personally, this editor thought that Lamborghini would be showcasing a new four door hybrid competitor ala their Estoque concept a few years back.

Instead, Lamborghini took the wraps off their car and dropped a bomb. A sinister, swooping, angry looking bomb that stopped more than one show-goer in their tracks and put media camera shutters on overtime duty. It was clear that the fighting bull wanted a slice of the hypercar pie that Porsche, Ferrari, and McLaren were all competing for and Lamborghini had done their homework. No messing around, no soft side, and not a hybrid system in sight. Introducing the Lamborghini Veneno

  • Mansory Carbonado Takes the Lamborghini Aventador to the Twin-Turbo Danger Zone

mansory carbonado aventador 1 640x426 Mansory Carbonado Takes the Lamborghini Aventador to the Twin Turbo Danger Zone

The Lamborghini Aventador isn’t exactly what most people would call “slow.” Its 6.5L V12 sends most of its 691hp to all four-wheels, vaulting the Aventador to 60 mph in about three seconds en route to a top speed comfortably over 200 mph. And thanks to those wild, stealth aircraft inspired looks, it’s not exactly subtle, either.

However, many sheiks, oligarchs and reality TV producers wouldn’t be caught dead in a mere stock Lamborghini. It just wouldn’t be an accurate reflection of their station in life. The same cannot be said for this carbon-clad number from Mansory.

  • A.R.T. G Streetline 65 is a Blinding Display of Tuning

ART Mercedes Benz G65 AMG Streetline 05 640x423 A.R.T. G Streetline 65 is a Blinding Display of Tuning

In case it’s not on your radar, the Geneva Motor Show is opening March 7th and will feature premieres from nearly every manufacturer and tuner across the globe. McLaren will be revealing their P1 hypercar in the flesh, Ferrari will be showcasing their Enzo successor, TECHART will enlighten its customers with further details about their new 991 customization program, and the list goes on and on.

Nürnberg-based A.R.T. Tuning is joining is the fray with their new widebody kit for the Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG. A.R.T. says their new G Streetline 65 kit “makes the legend an icon”. We’ll chalk that up to a translation error because what the kit really looks like it means is “makes a blindingly large SUV a road-monstering behemoth”.

  • KTM X-Bow GT is a Bit More Civilized

KTM X BOW GT 4 640x426 KTM X Bow GT is a Bit More Civilized

If the average performance car is like a chainsaw, the KTM X-Bow is like a pocketknife. It doesn’t have a tire-evaporating hellion of an engine, but it also doesn’t have such extravagances as full fenders, air conditioning, or a roof. It’s not quite as elemental as an Ariel Atom, but you certainly wouldn’t describe it as civilized.

However, KTM seems to be ready to give its slim-and-trim track toy some better table manners for those who want them. They plan to do this by way of the X-Bow GT, which is set to premiere at next week’s Geneva Motor Show. And even though a couple of the figurative edges have been softened, overall, it sounds like it’s still the same mid-engine wild child.

  • The McLaren P1: Redefining the Million Dollar Hypercar

McLaren P1 05 640x480 The McLaren P1: Redefining the Million Dollar Hypercar

In the automotive world, patience is truly a virtue. Toyota spent their sweet time teasing the release of the FR-S/GT86/BRZ and even took nine years to deliver the LFA to us, after they decided to swap the aluminum body panels for carbon fiber. Lamborghini spent over a combined half a century on the four V12 predecessors (Miura, Countach, Diablo, and Murcielago) to the Aventador. So it would seem to be that the longer a car takes to release, the more awesome it will be as a result.

The company that one Bruce McLaren founded is no stranger to the waiting game. After release of the F1 back in 1992, it took them over two decades to follow it up with it’s successor, the P1 you see before you on these pages. We’re glad to see that the car hasn’t changed too much from the concept released at last year’s Paris Motor Show and now that we’ve got some information on the numbers, we’re really excited to see it premiere at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. Welcome to the 2013 McLaren P1.
