There are many fascinating forms of motorsports that few people have heard about, but time attack has to be one of our favorites. Rather than racing other cars and drivers directly, participants race the clock, and the fastest lap time wins. In other words, it’s like qualifying without a race afterward.
The other thing we love about time attack is the sheer variety and sophistication of the cars taking part in it. And time attack cars don’t get much more extreme than this heavily-modified Mitsubishi Evo IX. With a Cosworth-built 2.2L turbocharged inline-four under the hood generating about 850 horsepower, this monster Mitsubishi is able to lap Japan’s famous Tsukuba Circuit in about 54 seconds. For those who don’t know, that’s an obscenely quick time around that track. And the team that campaigns it hopes to turn an even more obscene time later this year, specifically a lap in the 52 second bracket. Zounds.
