NIO EP9 is Lightning in Car Form

If there’s one thing that the products of Tesla Motors – the Roadster, Model S and Model X – have taught us, it’s that electric cars can be freakishly, comically fast. And the crazy thing is, electric cars have the potential to deliver even more potent performance, and China’s NextEV is keen to prove it with its first roadgoing hypercar, the NIO EP9.

Armed with four motors and four gearboxes (i.e. one of each for each wheel), the one megawatt – which works out to 1,341 horsepower – NIO EP9 supposedly rips to 60 mph in 2.7 seconds, to 124 mph in 7.1 seconds, and tops out at just a hair under 195 mph. And lest you assume that it’s nothing more than a runway racer/autobahn assassin that’s useless in the turns, know that NextEV (which won the inaugural FIA Formula E World Championship driver’s title with Nelson Piquet Jr.) claims this battery-fed beast generates 5,395 lbs. of downforce at 149 mph, which apparently helped it set a new EV lap record of 7:05.12 around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Top it off with a 265 mile range on a full charge and you have a super supercar that kinda sounds too good to be true…though we’re certainly hoping it isn’t.
