Fewer contradictions in the automotive world (or the world, period) are as intriguing as the high performance station wagon. They manage to be commodious enough to handle the spoils of a victorious Costco run and benign enough to cart the young ‘uns to and from school and other activities, yet stomp on the go pedal and Mr. Hyde gives Dr. Jekyll the ol’ heave-ho, performing super sedan (if not supercar) feats of strength and agility. Seriously, how can any sane person calling himself or herself a car enthusiast not give hot wagons anything less than grudging respect?
And perhaps the hottest station wagon of the moment (at least from an OEM) is the new Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S-Model Wagon. But what if you throw non-stock estate cars into the mix? That’s what MotorTrend’s Jonny Lieberman decided to do when he lined AMG’s latest Überkombi up against the Icon Derelict, a ridiculously refined rat rod/resto mod 1952 Chrysler Town & Country. You may not agree with Loverman’s pick for the winner, but really, can either of these battlewagons be called losers? Precisely.
