Top 10 Tuner Cars of 2011 title

A new year is very nearly upon us (and in some parts of the world, it already is), and while it’s a good time to look forward to what 2012 will bring, it’s also a good time to take stock of 2011’s happenings. Modified and tuned vehicles are, if you haven’t noticed, near and dear to our heart, and the last 364 days have seen some downright dandies debut. But if we listed all the tuner cars, trucks and SUVs that scratched our itch, you’d be reading until at least half your friends and family broke their resolutions. Ergo, we’ve decided to cap this list of 2011’s top tuned rides at 10, meaning that only the cream of the last 52 weeks’ crop made the cut. Here they are...

It’s been almost four months since we’ve reported on a tuned Porsche Panamera. Fans of the bootylicious super sedan are no doubt experiencing withdrawal symptoms left and right. Thankfully, Edo Competition has come through and is ready to help us give you your fix.

Now we know what you’re thinking: Hasn’t Edo already worked its magic on the Panamera? The Panamera Turbo, yes. But the creation you see here is based on the Panamera S, which features a normally-aspirated version of the Turbo’s 4.8L V8 and rear- rather than all-wheel-drive. But those aren’t the only differences from Moby Dick.

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a new BMW M5 on the way. Unfortunately, this means the outgoing M5 based on the E60 series chassis will quickly be forgotten by most poseurs (and a good many legitimate enthusiasts) in favor of the hot new F10 generation M5. That’s the automotive circle of life.

But nothing can change the fact that the old M5 is a spectacular car no matter how you slice it. The expertly-honed chassis, yowling normally-aspirated 5.0L V10 and standard 7-speed paddle shift transmission (a Cro-Magnon 6-speed manual was also offered here in North America) helped the E60 M5 enjoy a long reign as king of the super sedans. And the top-notch tuners at edo competition are giving the king a royal sendoff.

Even though it’s no longer Mercedes-Benz’s supercar of the moment, the SLR McLaren is still a savage, sexy beast of a motorcar. But not everyone is satisfied with having just another SLR McLaren, even if it’s a special edition model like the 722 Edition. As is the case with many other supercars, these folks need something…more.

Our friends at edo competition are the latest group to grab hold of the Anglo-German exotic – specifically the aforementioned 722 Edition – and make it snappier. As is their prerogative, the German spanner-spinners didn’t just focus on one area; the package for the 722 Edition – called Black Arrow – is a bumper-to-bumper makeover aimed at bumping up the badass quotient to 11.

While its gestation and arrival were surrounded by controversy, Porsche’s first production sedan – the Panamera – is now firmly established as part of the German marque’s current lineup. Unfortunately for Porsche, not all buyers consider its performance to be satisfactory, even in 500hp Turbo form. Luckily for them, there are many tuners who are ready and waiting to hop up their hunchbacked Hessian hyperhatch.

One such tuner is edo competition, a respected German outfit that offers performance and cosmetic upgrades for a wide variety of European exotic and luxury cars. And Edo’s latest package for the Panamera Turbo not only serves up heaping doses of speed and style, but it also wears a name that’s sure to bring a smile to the faces of classic literature fans, Porschephiles and, er, people with the minds of 12-year-old boys alike: Moby Dick.
