Tuning Like It's 1991: INDEN Design Rebuilds Mercedes S-Class Back in the Day

INDEN Design 1991 Mercedes S-Class

Here's a blast from the past. Usually when we are showcasing tuners, we are serving up the latest and greatest customization packages available. But today, we take pause, and look at the beginning of this great tradition, at least when it comes to one great mod shop, INDEN-Design. 1983 was a marque year for Mercedes-Benz, as they released their long-storied S-Class model line. In 1991, as its first project, Haiger-based INDEN-Design rebuilt this car as only a tuner can.

Using a 1983 Mercedes-Benz S-Class W126 sedan as the base model, the first thing you'll notice is that INDEN widened and flaired the front and rear wheel arches to accomodate their massive Champion aluminum rims, measuring 18 x 10.5 in front and 18 x 12.5 inches in rear, wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires.

From a performance standpoint, the car features a stainless steel exhaust system, specially shortened dampers and progressive-rate lowering springs and a AP 6-piston sports brake system with 352 x 32mm discs. Power is delivered from a 386 hp 6.0-liter engine, outfitted with 100mm pistons from a 560 SE.

Inside, the 1983 Mercedes S-Class is decked out with black Nappa leather, König Sport seats up front and gray bird's eye maple wood trim.

The great thing about the  INDEN-Design 1983 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is that, even though it was constructed almost 19 years ago, the car still embodies the modern age of tuning. It features a long body, darkened windows, large radiator grills, a black exterior and interior, lowered suspension, racing-inspired brakes, a sports exhaust system and a nice bump in horsepower. As far as we've come with technology, the basics remain the same and this car looks very at home on the street.
