Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen Celebrates It's 30th Birthday with EDITION30

Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen EDITION30

Okay, so we know this is not exactly a Sub5zero vehicle. But every now and then we make exceptions for things near and dear to our heart. And the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen is just one of those things. Since it's inception in 1979 it has remained true to itself, never giving in to the design whims of the marketplace that called for it to be "less rugged", "not so boxy" and so forth and so on. But it is truly the fact that it maintains its original military fascade that makes it such a success story. And 30 years after its initial launch Mercedes is releasing the special G-Class EDITION30 and EDITION30.PUR in celebration. I don't know about you but we have our party hats on!

The EDITION30.PUR is a long-wheelbase Station Wagon that pays homage to the original hard-core G-Model with modern-day advancements to tackle any terrain. The EDITION30 is even more able with off-road packages that include 265/75R16 aluminum wheels, flexible wheel arch flaring, quick access to the roofrack with a step-on bonnet, special grills to protect all headlights as well as a towing lug located in front.

The interior is also ruggetized and fortified with optional hard-wearing fabric or synthetic leather. In addition, the passenger flooring is covered with rubber, the controls are spray coated for protected and there are drainage holes in the footweels. In the rear, which open with two doors, there is a loading compartment with wood paneling and sliding rails. For seriously inclimate weather there is even an auxiliary heater and manually operated air conditioner.

Because this is Sub5zero.com we have to at least mention our all time favorite G-Class. It comes from none other than German tuning powerhouse Brabus. The Brabus G V12 is the world's only twelve cylinder SUV. This absolute beast carries a 6.3L engine putting out 610 horsepower with 742 lb-ft of torque. Top speed is electronically limited to 143 mph and it can perform a 0 to 60 sprint in 5.2 seconds (in this case, close enough for us.) Check out the pictures below:
