2009 New York Auto Show - 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Unveiled

A couple weeks ago we posted an article about Brabus beating AMG to the punch in tuning the new Mercedes-Benz E550. Now, AMG has come back over the top with the unexpected. The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG packs a 6.3-liter V8 engine putting out 518 hp with 465 lb-ft of torque. This makes it capable of a 4.4 second 0 to 60 mph time. The new AMG bests the Brabus version by 56 hp and .3 seconds in the sprint to 60 mph. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph (but an extra AMG option allows it to run up to 186 mph.)

By taking technology from its sibling, the SL63 AMG Roadster, the new E63 is transformed into one hell of a performance sports sedan. The AMG Speedshift 7-speed sports transmission is ported over which replaces the usual torque converter with a mult-disc wet start-up clutch. This provides four individual drive modes (Controlled Efficiency, Sport, Sport Plus and Manual), rev-matched shifts and a Race Start function. The E63 benefits from the AMG Ride Control sport suspension which allows the car to perform equally well both on the track or city streets. Electronically controlled damping varies according to driving situation. Mercedes also provides a 3-stage ESP system that allows for stability assistance to be turned either off or on as well put into an ESP Sport mode.

Deceleration is provided by 14.2 inch ventilated and perforated disc brakes all around. AMG 18 inch light alloy wheels are paired with 255/40R18 tires in front and 285/35R18 rubber in rear. Aerodynamic adjustments take the form of AMG side skirts and a rear apron with a black diffuser insert. The AMG sports exhaust system features two chrome plated twin tailpipes.

If all of this just isn't cutting it for you there are several additional AMG options available. These include 19 inch alloy wheels, an AMG Performance suspension, a revised AMG rear axle locking differential, an AMG Performance steering wheel as well as the ability to remove the limiter to push top speed up to 186 mph. The 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG will be available in November of this year.
