Apollo Arrow Picks up Where Gumpert Left Off

One of the most intriguing supercar startups of the last decade or so was, without a doubt, Gumpert. Named for its founder, former Audi motorsports exec Roland Gumpert, the company grabbed lots of attention via its homely-but-hella-fast first effort, the Apollo. Unfortunately, the firm didn’t manage to grab much in the way of cash, and went bust in 2013. Thankfully, Herr Gumpert and crew managed to find some new backers from Hong Kong, and the renamed Apollo Automobil is ready to jump back in the game with the Apollo Arrow.

Although it’s still based on the Gumpert Apollo (which does not, thankfully, seem to have been retroactively renamed the Apollo Apollo), the Arrow is wrapped in much more modern and cohesive-looking bodywork said to be inspired by sharks and the F-22 fighter jet. Power still comes from an Audi twin-turbo V8, but now it’s Ingolstadt’s 4.0L “hot V” engine (with the intake outside and the exhaust and turbochargers inside the V) tuned to produce an estimated 1,000 horsepower and 738 lb.-ft of torque. Teamed with a 7-speed sequential transmission (with gear ratios specifiable by the buyer), the rear-drive Arrow should be able to blast to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds and max out at 224 mph.

Apollo says it will build no more than 100 Arrows total. Yet it will still be less exclusive than the Apollo N, a sort of extra-strength farewell edition of the Gumpert Apollo; just six of those are being made. Regardless of which you choose, you’re going to be getting a remarkable machine.
