2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS is a Rear-Engine Riot [w/ Video]

It’s been a while – five model years in fact – since Porsche has produced a 911 GT2. The GT2, of course, was the extra-powerful, extra-ornery rear-drive-only turbocharged model that, in its original 993 guise, was a racing homologation model, while the subsequent 996- and 997-based versions simply filled the role of the most badass stock 911s you could buy. In fact, we don’t think we’re alone in arguing that the GT2s are more direct successors to the juggling-grenades-with-the-pins-removed 930 Turbo Carrera than any late model 911 Turbo. Thankfully, the boosted bash-your-face-in Neunelfer drought ends in a big way with the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Taking lessons from the various road and race versions of the 991-chassis GT3, the GT2 RS adds even more vents, scoops, skirts and wings (including a big-honkin’ adjustable one on the back) to make better use of air as it passes by. The bulging fenders are home to huge wheels (20” fronts, 21” rears) wearing fat and sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The interior loses the rear seats and gains a partial roll cage (at least GT2 RSs sold outside the U.S. do), while propulsion duties will fall to a beefed up version of the Turbo S’s 3.8L twin-turbo flat-six rated at 700 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft of torque, which gets passed through a 7-speed PDK transmission and onto the 325/30R21 rear tires.

Porsche says the standard GT2 RS will lunge to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds and top out at 211 mph. And if you want even more amazing performance (and don’t mind adding a gobsmacking $31,000 to the $273,584 base MSRP), you can order the Weissach Package, which shaves 66 lbs. off the curb weight via goodies like CFRP exterior bits and magnesium wheels. Oh yeah, this thing means business.
